THE DARKNESS AND THE NIGHT trilogy is now in paperback!
2010.12.19 01:52:00

Now, all three books in my erotic horror trilogy, The Darkness and the Night, are available in trade paperback!

About The Darkness and the Night

I wrote book one, Blood and Coffee, with Homer's Odyssey in mind--a dark, vampire's odyssey that would take the character to Hell and back in her quest for the HEA, a story arc that would continue throughout most of the trilogy.  The twisted romance between Karen and Billy is very primal, with neither experienced enough to understand the difference between love and lust, a lesson that comes hard for Karen.

Book two, Cosmic Orgasm, is all about Karen's self empowerment as a woman.  Karen takes charge of her life, despite all she has suffered.  Although still on the run, she makes finally makes her stand, and finds true love along the way.

The third book, Twins of Darkness, is a little different, as it follows the first eighteen years of Karen's twin children's lives, while she and her lover hide out in the jungles of suburbia.  To achieve this, I divided the story into four parts: Vampire. Mommy. covers the first several months following the twins' birth; The Innocent One covers them as young children; A Family Affair takes place during their adolescent years, and The Awakening occurs when the twins are in their late teens.  Karen tries so hard to give her kids a normal life, despite her vamipirism--unfortunately neither of the twins is anything close to "normal," which results in some very unforseen consequences.

What Draws Me to Write Erotic Sci-Fi and Horror . . . with Literary Elements
2010.12.09 10:15:14

One might think there would be major differences between writing space opera and crafting erotic horror, but it is what they have in common that makes both genres among my favorites to write.  Take the similarities between aliens and vampires, for example.  You might not think the two have much of anything in common, but consider the following:

·         Since both are open to creative interpretation, the sky’s the limit on character attributes, strengths, weaknesses, abilities, beliefs, etc.

·         Both allow for creative freedom in world-building and universe “rules.”

·         Both create an outlet through which the author might explore the human condition.

I also happen to be a big fan of canonical literature, so I also feel compelled to write for the well-read audience.  The result is my own unique brand of dark, literary erotica: multi-layered, with intricate characters and an intense reading experience.

Fang-tastic Books writes about The Darkness and the Night: Blood and Coffee:

"Lisa Lane has managed to combine it all into one fascinating read that defies conventional genre labeling. She's a great storyteller with a wild imagination and if you are interested in something dark and new this is a book for you."

Bitten by Books writes about The Darkness and the Night II: Cosmic Orgasm:

“Karen is one vampire that you won’t forget!”

Cerebral Reviews writes about The Darkness and the Night III: Twins of Darkness:

“As I’ve already said, the plot is superb, and when such a plot comes along, I always marvel at the human imagination and what it can produce. . . . I won’t reveal the spoiler here, but what I will say is what happens between Karen and the person ‘brought back’ gave me pause to wonder what I would do in her situation. Yes, it made me stop reading to ponder, but I see that as a good thing. A book that can make you think like that…well, it’s good, right?”

Whipped Cream Erotic Reviews writes of Lust in Space:

“Ms. Lane embraced all that we love about sci-fi fantasy and heated it up to super-nova proportions. My question for Ms. Lane is, is this a long-term mission? If so, I'm applying for a boarding pass.”

I don’t write just to tell stories, but because I love words.  I love crafting sentences that contain multiple meanings, creating characters that have no choice but to face their dark sides, and building worlds in which politics, religion, and hypocrisy are free domain and subject to my literary wrath (Stephen King and Kurt Vonnegut meets Scribblerus, if you will).  I write because I want to leave my readers with something different, something profound or personally meaningful.

Since many of my storylines are so complex, I ask you the reader:  Have either the Lust in Space books or The Darkness and the Night trilogy left you with unanswered questions, unsure about characters, or unsure about a twist?  Conversely, have you found (or think you have found) any of my literary “Easter eggs” and care to share?  I’d love to chat about it.

Two New Reviews!
2009.04.29 01:45:36

Phoebe Jordan of Talk About My Favorite Authors just released reviews for the first two books in my The Darkness and the Night series, giving Blood and Coffee 3.5 Open Books and Cosmic Orgasm 4 Open Books.  My thanks to Phoebe, who delved into horrorica--not her genre of choice--on a chance, after reading and enjoying my romantic, erotic sci-fi novel, Lust in Space.  I think these reviews are very fair and accurate, and I am happy to share them now with you.

From Phoebe's review for Blood and Coffee:

I had a good time reading this novel because it was different from many of the novels that I usually read. I both liked and disliked Karen because even though she is a strong female character there are times that I really thought she could have done things differently if she wanted to. This also goes the same for Billy the vampire who turns Karen because seems like a nice loving guy but then he shows his true colors as a psyhco. There were some very steamy sex scenes between Karen and Billy that I really enjoyed because they have this attraction to one another even though at first Karen hates Billy for turning her. I also felt kind of creeped out when I read some the scary suspense scenes throughout the novel and I should expect that since it is a dark horror erotic novel with vampires. I enjoyed reading the novel though sometimes I wondered who was good and who was evil throughout the novel because sometimes Karen seemed like she was headed towards being evil while somtimes Billy was headed towards actually being good. Towards the end of the novel I was really looking forward to reading the next The Darkness & the Night series to find out what else is in store for Karen and Billy after the way this novel ended. I give this book 3.5 Open Books

From Phoebe's review for Cosmic Orgasm:

This book is much more exciting and scarier than the first book because now I have a sense of who is evil and who isn't unlike the first book. I like Karen more in this novel because she has come to accept that she is a vampire and doesn't have to kill a human in order to survive. There were some pretty scary and heartbreaking scenes in this book that I enjoyed reading about because it really helped me understand Karen and even Billy more than I did before. I finished the book much quicker than the first and by the time I read the last sentence in the last chapter I really wanted Lisa Lane's next and conclusion to her The Darkness & the Night series to be published already so I could read it. I give this book 4 Open Books

Behind the Funny mask i wear ....
2009.01.30 10:55:28

I don't know if the people that know me best realize that they are always the templates for the characters I write, or that you can tell if I am happy or not with each by the way the character behaves. I once wrote a short story that started off as a misguided love affair between a woman (me) and a werewolf ( a former lover of mine). The lover was not a very big fan of the truth, and when I caught  him in yet another lie, not only was the real life affair over, so was the affair between the woman and the werewolf. I killed that wolfie, big time!

In The Brotherhood: To Lay or to Slay, my female lead is the best and worst parts of me. Well, at least for the most part. Richmond, the Slayer in the series is my current paramor, although I would only admit that to him if I were being stretched on a rack or being denied chocolate.(You know, tortured!) He has been my inspiration, not only for that one character, but to give some real depth to others, as well as naming a few. In fact, he was angry that I killed off one of the characters that he helped me name. Honestly, if you write about vampire slayers, eventually someone has to be, well, slain!

Alex's next adventure is going to take her deeper into her own nature than she might be ready for, and will explore more of the sensuality of the vampire. Because, let's face it, fear them, loathe them or love them, we are all just a little turned on by a dark haired, white fanged hottie!

Writer’s Separation Anxiety
2009.01.23 21:04:17

You know that sick feeling you get when you've spent a lot of time with someone you really enjoy, but now you've got to leave them indefinitely? It's almost the same as being homesick. Well, I have it...but over a character.

I'm wrapping up the second novel in the Blood & Sex series, and I'm finding that I have a severe case of separation anxiety. Jonas and his new love have been such entertaining people to spend time with. I've enjoyed writing his story and watching them fall in love. As always, that fratello has taken me to some pretty kinky places and shown me things beyond what I could have imagined. He's so fascinating and such a strong personality that throughout the story, I found that I was dreaming about him. I would wake up and couldn't wait to write more, just so that I could see him. Talk about a case of writer's schizophrenia!

Now, I'm finishing the edits and still writing about him here and there. It's new stuff that has nothing to do with his romance with Elena. It won't even be in the books, but I can't stop. He's insatiable. I thought that he just enjoyed watching me drool. But now I'm starting to wonder if he's going to make room for the third hero. Michael was fun, but by the time I was done with Michael's first draft, Jonas was standing around, tapping his foot, and occasionally flashing a set of handcuffs and a lascivious grin in my direction. The third hero is quiet, not quite the flirt that Jonas is.

I think I'm going to have to strap Jonas into some of his bondage equipment and leave him there while I spend a little time with bachelor number three.

Until tomorrow...

Angie

Vampires in Romance and Erotica
2009.01.22 05:42:15
Vampires are a common theme in romance and erotica.  A number of well written vampire-based works have been released here at Ravenous Romance.  What’s not to love?  Vampires are dangerous, powerful . . . and nocturnal.  What woman hasn’t enjoyed indulging in some kind of vampire fantasy?  When comparing works, it’s fun to see the differences in mythos, characterization, and story, and yet intertwined amongst them the same basic elements and themes, those which make vampires so continuously popular.  There is much so more than meets the hypnotic eye, when it comes to the reasons that vampires continue to seduce us helpless mortals, century after century; it all boils down to theme.

In The Darkness and the Night series, the themes I chose came through motivations that I’m sure are common among other writers of this genre: with writing about vampires comes a freedom to express both our strongest hopes and our darkest fears about ourselves, and about humanity.  With great strength and power, we find that there must also come a relative weakness.  With vampires, the greatest weakness is generally sunlight, making darkness the ally and light the nemesis.  Might we take the “darkness” and “light” themes a step further by taking them within, making the vampire the perfect model for the struggle between “dark and light” that exists within us all?

In The Darkness and the Night: Blood and Coffee, Karen faces numerous struggles, the greatest of which being overcoming her recurring impulse to kill.  Many of the situations she falls into, however, threaten various freedoms that previously, in her innocence, she had taken for granted.  Control, chance, opportunity, and fate are strong themes throughout the book, and I think they mirror the struggle that all young women face, when finding their place in the world.  The moral dilemmas Karen faces are obviously grossly expanded versions of those faced by the average woman, but they still pose the same questions: How would you respond if, overnight, you lost everything that had previously defined your life? What would you be willing to sacrifice for your freedom, if it were taken away from you? What would you do, if you got pregnant, and then realized the father was a “monster?”

In the second book in the series (release date still TBA), the themes shift focus to freedom and control in the first half, and then shift again in the second half, to opportunity and fate.  In this story, Karen is forced to face her darkest fears in order to reclaim all that should be rightfully hers, escaping a mental institution, and even the clutches of Hell, for a second chance at life, a second chance at love, and a second chance for her unborn twins.  The trilogy, as a whole, takes a serious look at all that we hold most sacred as human beings, and then challenges and tests the beliefs we hold, the boundaries we set, and desires that exist within us all.

From Brom Stoker, to Anne Rice, to the many talented authors here at Ravenous Romance, vampires have held their place as the objects of our passion and desire.  As writers, writing about vampires is a surreal and sensual experience.  The profundity of each individual story translates differently through every reader who decides to come along for the ride.  Still, we each take from these guilty pleasures some kind of insight; as we explore the darkness, in turn we move ever closer to reaching and understanding the inner light we all also so desperately crave.

Where do I find my ideas?
2009.01.16 22:20:38

Where do I find my ideas? Everywhere!

I jump off on tangents, one after the other.

Just there, up above, I accidentally typed "w-e-r-e" instead of "w-h-e-r-e" in everywhere. (Of course I went back and fixed it.)

But my first thought wasn't were, as in was, past tense, we were, I was, but were, as in were-wolf, were-bear.

Pronounced "where". I guess that's why I typed it originally.

You might be wondering what this has to do with finding ideas.

So, the tangent hopping had me visualizing hopping from log, to log, to log.

Where might such a thing happen? Where are there logs? Who would be hopping from log to log? (Besides a frog...)

Perhaps a contest for the strongest, most agile, muscular man in a female dominated society.... Where women rule and men are just physical labor....

But what if a ruler in this land falls in love with a man, a were-man, who is really something else when he isn't with her?

What could he be?

What if she values his counsel, and actually heeded his advice, but she would be publicly hanged if found out?

But she cannot possibly give up his touch. His caresses. His tongue lashings.

Who would have such a tongue?

Perhaps a snake; a pronged tongue to lick her most sensitive places. And who wouldn't listen to counsel when being lavished this way?

Perhaps he is a spy to win back man's place in society.... To put women back in bondage... What if she is the lynch-pin to the undoing of all woman-kind?

This is starting to sound like an erotic version of the Garden of Eden. I just need an apple. Loads of stories used apples, even Snow White...

All that from a typo. And I don't even think there's much there...

yet....

Hmmmm. Typo.

Type O. I'm type O. I wonder if that would be the Cristal among vampires?

Excuse me, I have some tangents to follow....

Please join me in my virtual imagination by leaving a comment, question, or thought.
